Water containing dissolved minerals, usually Calcium (Ca2+ ) and Magnesium (Mg2+) ions with their Carbonates, Chlorides, and Sulphates in highly concentrated levels called” Hard Water or Hardness in Water.” Hardness pops up several issues, such as scaling in drainage lines, cooling towers, boilers, etc.
The removal of divalent cations that dissolve in water is called water softening. The ion exchange method is the easiest, cheapest, and most successful in softening.
Softening is not sufficient for many industrial purposes where they require water with low salt concentration and low conductivity. So demineralization plants are commonly used in boiler feedwater treatment, pharmaceutical applications, Electronic industry, food industry, and so on, to remove all dissolved ions; Sodium, chlorides, sulfates, nitrates, and silica.
The demineralization process removes all inorganic salts in water using the ion-exchange method. Demineralization systems with more columns, including strong acid cation resins and strong base anion resins, will treat water similar to distilled water at a lower cost.

Wire EDM cutting uses deionized (DI) water as its dielectric fluid. Very low conductivity and resistivity are required for EDMs. If there are any impurities in the dielectric fluid, it will affect the final product. Also, water with higher TDS (total dissolved solids) causes sparkling. Therefore DI water supply units are installed with EDMs. Mixed bed ion exchange resins are used to generate DI water. Strong acid cation resins and Strong base anion resins use to polish water.
These resins are designed with a mixed bed to cater the requirements of the electronics industry for wafer and microchip production. These requirements need the highest possible water quality (<1 ppb Total Organic Carbon (TOC) and >18.2 MΩ·cm resistivity, with minimum rinse times), while eliminating contamination of the high purity circuits when ion exchange resin is first installed.
