Basic Knowledge of Felite™ Water Softener Resin

An overview of water softening
Water softening is the process of using ion exchange resins, most commonly in the form of water softener resin beads, in order to exchange the hardness ions present in water for sodium ions. Water softening reduces the level of hardness-causing Calcium (Ca) and Magnesium (Mg) ions present in water.

Hardness is a common and well-documented water quality issue. It causes scaling (deposition) in pipes and on plumbing fixtures and causes poor performance of soaps and detergents. Hard water causes scaling in boilers, cooling towers, pipes, and other plant equipment, which, if not adequately managed, can be costly.

In water softening, a vessel is filled with water softener media resin, referred to as beads. These specially manufactured softener resin beads are saturated with sodium ions. During the ion exchange process, sodium ions are exchanged with the hardness ions in the water. This process involves the exchange of positively charged ions and is referred to as cationic resin water softening.

Once the resin is saturated with hardness minerals, it will enter a regeneration mode where a brine solution is passed through the resin to wash out all the hardness minerals. Cleaning of water softener resin is then carried out followed by resin settling and recharging with sodium for further use. Strong Acid Cation (SAC) resin is the most common type of resin used for water softening.

Properties of water softener beads
Below is a brief summary of the ion exchange water softener resin properties that will play a vital role in the efficacy of the water softening process depending on the type of application. The choice of resin will be determined by influent water quality as well as effluent water quality requirements.

Crosslink percentage
This value is typically between 7 – 10% and essentially describes the number of molecular bonds or “crosslinks” in the structure of the resin bead. Resins with a higher crosslink percentage are physically harder and have a higher ion exchange capacity meaning they can do more softening. They are usually more resistant to fouling, thus reducing the frequency of resin replacement.

Whilst resins with higher crosslink percentages are more effective, they are also more costly.

Resin type
There are two main resin types: gel or macroporous. Gel resins generally have smaller pores, a higher initial exchange capacity, and are less expensive than macroporous resins. Macroporous resins, however, are an attractive option for special applications. Due to their larger pore size, they can effectively remove specific contaminants and can maintain effectiveness in harsh operating environments.

Mesh size
Fine Mesh Water Softener Resin
Mesh size refers to the size of the individual resin beads. Smaller beads represent a finer mesh size. Fine mesh resins will pack together more tightly, thus providing a larger ion-exchange surface area, and therefore greater softening. It is important to note that because fine mesh resin will pack more tightly, this reduces the flow rate through the softener more significantly than standard mesh resin.
