The world without resins is unbelievable. Why? Resins touch a significant number of industrial applications in various ways. Wastewater treatment in many fields such as nuclear power generation, hydrometallurgy and mining sectors, water purification sectors in EDM machines, electronic field, laboratories, food and beverage industries, and nuclear industry (or power industry), etc. are using ion exchanging technology. Resins involve exchanging ions in the water purification industry.
There are many DI resin grades with resin manufacturers. Felite™ Resin Technology has been introducing different resin types for several applications, and this article will raise DI resin grades developed by Felite™.
What are DI resins?
DI stands for deionization. Deionization or demineralization is a chemical process that forms high purity water by removing all charged particles in raw water using an ion-exchange method. Demineralization or deionization produces water that is similar in quality to distilled water. The resins we used for the deionization process are called DI resins. Let’s have a brief introduction to resins. Resins are spherical, tiny plastic beads. They are manufactured by using styrene and divinyl-benzene (DVB) in common. The DVB acts as the hardener, and the combination ratio of these two materials creates different types of resins with other properties. These resins are coated with different functional groups, and they are in the form of anions and cations. Cation resins and anion resins can be divided further.
- Strong Acid Cation resins (SAC)
- Weak Acid Cation resins (WAC)
- Strong Base Anion resins (SBA)
- Weak Base Anion resins (WBA)
Design engineers will select the suitable resin types according to their application. The key role of resins is involved in the ion exchange process. In general, cation resins exchange their positive ions with cations in the influent source, and anion resins exchange their negative ions with anions in the influent source.
Which types of DI resin grades are available in the market?
Many DI resin grades are available with manufacturers unique to their companies. Felite™ Resin Technology is always ready to supply the best resin types that suit you, and here are some DI resin grades introduced by Felite™.
- Nuclear grade DI resins
- Semiconductor grade DI resins
- Felite™ indicator type resin grade
- DI resin for EDM applications.
Nuclear grade DI resin
Nuclear power stations can face lots of issues with corrosion, and scaling in equipment can be an issue for their safety and maintenance; radioactive contaminations can also occur, problems with cooling towers & boilers, etc. There are many freshwater treatment setups within the stations, and some of them are boiler and cooling tower makeup plants. Also, condensate polishing, stator cooling treatment, reactor cooler purification, spent fuel pool purification, and radioactive waste purification, use treatment plants. DI resins involve in these water treatment facilities. Deionization using the ion exchanging method is the path of resins involvement in nuclear power stations.
Nuclear grade resins are a mixture of hydrogen form strong acid cations and hydroxyl form type I strong base anions into the ratio of 2:3, respectively. Felite™ introduces you following nuclear grade resins.
- FMB401-BNG – Felite™ designs FMB401-BNG to produce ultra-pure water for many purposes and is specially introduced as a nuclear grade resin type. This product is a mixture of SAC and SBA resin types in a 2:3 ratio. These resin types are manufactured with specific properties, high resistivity, high capacity, and long life span, and also support easy separation in the regeneration of the DI plant. Not only for nuclear plants but also can use in many other industries such as PEDI, washing plants, etc. (Refer to particular TDS for technical evaluation)
- FMB401-NG – this product combines Hydrogen form strong acid cation resins and Hydroxide form type-1 strong base anion resins into a 2:3 ratio. FMB401-NG type resin can use for any deionization applications due to its high resistivity, high capacity, stability in pH range, and long lifetime. (Refer to particular TDS for technical evaluation).
Semiconductor grade DI resin
Semiconductor devise manufacturing industries utilize a considerable amount of ultrapure water for various purposes from devise fabrication, equipment cooling, and surface cleaning. Ultra-pure water usually can be produced with reverse osmosis and deionized resin beds. According to the design parameters, engineers will design one technology or adjust several technologies to generate pure water. Deionization using the ion exchanging method will be a highly efficient, cost-effective method rising globally with developing resin types. Resin manufacturers pay great attention to supplying an effective variety that approaches the given targets, and Felite™ introduced semiconductor grade resin types for the electronic devise manufacturing field to achieve their targets cost-effectively.
- FMB401-BSC – Felite™ team specially designed FMB401-BSC mixed bed resin can utilize in semiconductor devise manufacturing fields. It has high resistivity of 18+ mega ohms and high capacity. Felite™, semiconductor grade resin, is black in color, and it is a 2:3 mixture of SAC resin and SBA type-1 resins. The product is ready to use in the market. These tiny spherical beads with gel structures have unique features of reducing TOC levels to be stable in any pH range. (Refer to particular TDS for technical evaluation).
Felite™ indicator types DI resin grades.
Indicator DI resins are new trends in the water purification industry. Felite™ introduced a new DI resin grade for ease of identification of resin bed exhausting time. There are available in two types.
- The first type combines a purple, strong acid cation gel-type resin with a standard, strong base, and the resin is ready to mix with mixed bed resin. This purple SAC resin is FC108-HID is 8% cross-linked with DVB and is in the form of hydrogen. This cation resin is mixed with standard SBA for DI purposes. The specialty of this SAC is “the purple color of the SAC change into amber color when the resin exhausts.” These resin types can be used where visual identification of cation resin exhaustion is desired.
- Also, Felite™ has introduced the mixed bed resin type with standard SAC resin and deep blue strong base anion gel-type resin. The blue color is converted into the standard amber color with the resin exhaustion. FA124-OHID is the introduced SBA type resin for visual identification of resin exhaustion. The functional group of the resin type is type-1 quaternary ammonium in the form of hydroxide.

DI resins for EDM applications.
Water parameters for EDM water are much critical. High pressurized deionized water is commonly utilized in this field. DI plants for ultra-pure water generation in the EDM field will be able to automatically detect the water flow, temperature, pressure, conductivity, and other parameters that affect water purity. DI resins perform high efficiency in water purification with ion exchange. Quality EDM resins for quality DI – EDM water is a challenge in the resin industry, but Felite™ meets the challenges and successfully supplies EDM grade DI resin for your requirements.
- FMB402 – Felite™ FC108-H and Felite™ FA124-OH (hydrogen form strong acid cation resin and the hydroxide form type I strong base anion resin) are combined with a 1:1 ratio. Felite™ FMB402 is designed to generate high-quality water. This product can generally utilize mixed bed deionization applications that require high resistivity and high capacities, such as EDM operations and spotless rinsing.
